The Columbus Crew needed to win or draw with goals to advance but Altidore scored on a bum ankle in the 60th minute in front of a sold-out crowd of 30,392 at BMO Field on Wednesday night.

The goal started with an Alex Bono goal kick that found Sebastian Giovinco deep in Columbus territory. The small Italian held off several defenders and backheeled the ball to Altidore who stabbed it to Victor Vazquez. The Spanish midfielder paused for a moment and then flicked a pass to Altidore who rolled a right-footed shot past Zack Steffen.

It was the Reds’ first goal in over 250 minutes of play. The last came back on October 30th on a Giovinco free kick in the 72nd minute of a 2-1 win over the Red Bulls on the road.

Columbus had a chance to even the score in the 87th minute when striker Ola Kamara just missed getting a foot on the ball on a cross. Bono would beat Kamara to a cross during stoppage time, denying him a chance for a late, heartbreaking goal.

With the win, TFC advances to their second straight MLS Cup but as of now they do not know who they will face. The Seattle Sounders and Houston Dynamo will play their second leg on Thursday to complete the MLS Cup field. Seattle leads on aggregate 2-0 with a road victory.

The MLS Cup will take place on Saturday December 9th at BMO field starting at 4:00 PM.
