Cats’ Filer Going Bald

Hamilton Tiger-Cats centre Mike Filer is going bald next Wednesday.

Wait, you cannot accurately predict the exact date when somebody will go bald!

In this case, yes, we can as Filer will be having his head shaved as well as his beard for his ‘Mike’s Manscaping Challenge for Cancer’. The initiative he spearheaded in support of Tomorrow Stems From You to raise money for the new Stem Cell Transplant Unit expansion at Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre.

On Friday, the organization announced that WeatherTech, a proud partner of the team, would be donating $10,000 to the event to bring the total just over $20,000. In addition to the money raised going to charity, Filer will be donating his hair to the Canadian Cancer Society.

WeatherTech did throw in one twist for the donation though. Instead of Filer having his beard shaved or his head, they wanted him to do both which he readily agreed to.

Filer, one of the longest serving members of the Tiger-Cats, lost his mother, Kim, to cancer in January 2017. For nine years, Kim had been receiving treatment at the Juravinksi Hospital and Cancer Centre during her journey of cancer. One of the steps was a stem cell transplant at the hospital to help treat her lymphoma. The entire Filer family knows on a deeply personal level the importance of increasing the hospital’s capacity to treat acute blood cancers.

Donations can still be made by visiting www.hamiltonhealth.ca/mmc4c.

We are certainly glad Filer has done this and we are even more happy about the timing of it. It gives him five months before the CFL season starts to grow his beard back. A baby-faced Filer wouldn’t be too intimidating on the grid iron.
